The world of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) continues to witness many recent innovations in products and services that have the potential to enhance communication for those with severe speech, language and literacy difficulties. On-going trends include the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in AAC devices, mobiles and apps with tools that offer multimodal access and systems that adapt to user settings with conversation-based response suggestions. These show promise to support AAC users in many ways and come alongside ever improving predictive text, speech synthesis and symbol choices with the use of better image generation and faster personalised large language models. Many of these initiatives have been shown to improve communication interactions, as well as tailor experiences to individual preferences.
The integration of mobile and wearable technology into AAC solutions with context-aware technologies, sensors and intuitive interfaces provides users with discreet and portable communication options supporting increased independence within an interconnected world. Additionally, the increase in cloud-based AAC services has allowed for the synchronisation of communication profiles across multiple devices, ensuring a consistent experience regardless of the platform. Remote support, interactive assessment and activities such as aided customisation of communication tools have provided families and carers with more autonomy in their use and choices of AAC systems, although cost can still be an issue as well as AI bias and the lack of ethical guidelines.
This Special Thematic Session (STS) aims to encourage those involved in the field of AAC to share their knowledge and reflections as we explore innovative products and services that promise greater inclusivity, independence, and empowerment for individuals facing communication barriers.
Papers for inclusion may include, but are not restricted to:
